ANOTHER CHANCE TO BEGIN TO "THINK AND GROW RICH" IN 2010: DEFINE YOUR PURPOSE

Greetings,

And don’t for a minute let this Book of The Revelation be out of mind. Ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure you practice everything written in it. Then you’ll get where you’re going; then you’ll succeed. (Joshua 1:8 Message Bible)

Welcome to day two on our journey to explore the thirty-one major reasons for failure as noted in the book “Think and Grow Rich”. In this issue of Let’s Talk, we will discuss the lack of a well defined purpose in life. The concept’s name alone is enough to suggest this could cause failure. In “Think and Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill says, “There is no hope of success for a person who does not have a central purpose and a definite plan.” A specific purpose is mandatory if we are to taste success. We must be crystal clear on why we exist and what we were created to do. If we do not explore and learn what our purpose is and how to effectively use the tools we have, we will not arrive at our destination, success.

For example, I have a tree I want to chop down. I know that I’m going to need a tool that can cut. I run to the kitchen to grab a butcher knife and begin to cut away at my tree. I can cut for the rest of my life and not chop down the tree because I’m a chef, not a landscaper and the butcher knife is for cutting meat, not trees. Although, I had a plan to chop down the tree, and tools used for cutting, I was outside of my purpose and therefore my plan was flawed.

I know that example was a stretch of the imagination, but that’s a good thing. Now here’s what I mean. We must know beyond a shadow of a doubt, what’s our purpose in life. Then we must have a definite plan of action in place to fulfill our purpose. If we don’t know who we are and why we are here, we will waste time trying to accomplish things that were never meant to be accomplished by us.

It’s like your parents telling you during your entire childhood you are going to become a doctor when you grow up. You realize that you faint at the sight of blood, are afraid of dead people and would rather be a builder. You love to work with your hands and one day hope to build houses for children orphaned by AIDS. But, you go to medical school anyway. You may get through undergrad, but you will never pass med school. You’re disappointed, your parents are disappointed and you’ve wasted time and money.

What we must truly realize is this. We were all created for a specific purpose and everything we need to fulfill that purpose has already been placed inside of us. No one knows that purpose but you. We have to be able to exam ourselves, figure out what we were created to do and make a committed decision to accomplish our purpose by a specific time. Don’t worry about the how. This is not your responsibility. It is the job of our subconscious mind to provide us with the how. The only thing our subconscious mind is looking for is a committed decision.

Once we make the decision, we must then develop a definite plan of action. The easiest way to accomplish a goal is to use what we are passionate about as a means of getting the job done. We must use our talents to bring about a change for someone else. Then, and only then, will we see a change in our own circumstances and finally walk in this thing we call success. Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. (Luke 6:38)

We must use our specific gifts. We cannot be a jack of all trades because we will be a master of none. I’m not saying we can’t do more than one thing. What I am saying is we should use our gifts and talents, our passion, the very thing we were created in life to do, and combine it with a plan that is crystal clear so that we can accomplish that which we were sent to do. We are here to affect change in the lives of others. If we do not know our definite purpose and have a well thought out plan of action, the result is failure.

How do we come up with this well thought out plan of action and definite purpose? As my Bishop would say, “I’m glad you asked”. We have to spend quality time alone. Making time to search our heart and mind to discover what’s really inside of us is how we figure things out. We must get into a quite place, and reach deep down inside to find what really makes us happy. We were created to serve one another. We just have to uncover what type of service fulfills us. When we uncover this truth and act upon it, we will realize real success.

We will be fulfilled. True happiness is when we can give ourselves away in the form of a give and effect change in the lives of others using what’s already inside of us. Changing situations for the better, that’s true success. Someone somewhere is waiting to fund our passion, our purpose so that a difference can be made, but we cannot be haphazard. Our purpose must be crystal clear and we must have a definite plan of action to avoid a place called failure.

I leave you with this quote:

Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing.
Thomas A. Edison

That’s it for this issue of Let’s Talk. Join me tomorrow when we will discuss, the lack of ambition to aim above mediocrity. I welcome your feedback. Please leave me any comments and/or questions and let me know what’s on your mind. If you know anyone who would benefit from this information, please share this site with them.

Until next time,

  1. One can utilize their gift if they recognize what it is. Do you have some insight on determining what their gifts are and how to best use them?

  3. I would suggest that one really search themselves and find out where their passion is. If we are able to discover this, then we will have found our gift. If we use that gift to bless the lives of others, then we shall surely reap what we have sown. We are blessed to be a blessing. I hope this helps. Thanks for the question. God bless.
